ABSTRACT

Gilts represent a group risk for Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae vertical transmission in swine herds. Therefore, parity segregation can be an alternative to control M. hyopneumoniae infections. The study evaluated the effect of parity segregation on M. hyopneumoniae infection dynamics and occurrence and severity of lung lesions at slaughter. For that, three multiple site herds were included in the study. Herd A consisted of the farm where gilts would have their first farrowing (parity order (PO) 1). After the first farrowing PO 1 sows were transferred to herd B (PO2-6). Herd C was a conventional herd with gilt replacement (PO1-6). Piglets born in each herd were raised in separated nursery and finishing units. Sows (n = 33 (A), 37 (B), 34 (C)) in all herds were sampled prior to farrowing and piglets (n = 54 (A), 71 (B), 66 (C)) were sampled longitudinally at 21, 63, 100, 140 days of age and at slaughter for M. hyopneumoniae detection by PCR and lung lesions scoring. M. hyopneumoniae prevalence in sows did not differ among herds. Prevalence of positive piglets was higher at weaning in the PO1 herd (A) (P < 0.05). However, prevalence of positive pigs from 100 days of age to slaughter age was higher in the PO2-6 herd (B) (P < 0.05). Lung lesion occurrence and severity were higher in herd B. The authors suggested that the lack of a proper gilt acclimation might have influenced the results, leading to sows being detected positive at farrowing, regardless of the parity.

ABSTRACT

Sow mortality is directly related to financial losses and productive efficiency in pig farms. Despite this, diseases associated with the death of sows are poorly understood. This study aimed to determine the main causes of death of sows in Brazilian pig farms. To perform this research, three Brazilian pig farms were visited, and necropsies were performed on all sows that had died spontaneously or were subjected to euthanasia. Tissue fragments were collected for histopathological and bacteriological examination. In addition, the clinical signs, productive stage, parity, and type of death (spontaneous or euthanasia) were recorded. A total of 138 necropsies were performed, and 132 had a conclusive diagnosis. The most frequent productive stages were gestation and lactation (33.3 and 31.9%, respectively), followed by parturient sows (17.4%), cull sows (9.4%), weaning-to-estrus interval (WEI) (4.3%), and unmated gilts (3.6%). The most affected organ systems were reproductive (28%), digestive (25%), locomotor (22%), cardiovascular (9.1%), and hematopoietic (6.1%). The most frequently diagnosed conditions were uterine prolapse (16/132; 12.1%), gastric ulcer (13/132; 9.8%), suppurative arthritis (11/132; 8.3%), liver lobe torsion (11/132; 8.3%), heart failure (9/132; 6.8%), vaginal or vaginal and rectal prolapse (9/132; 6.8%), and pododermatitis (8/132; 6.1%). Although 58.2% of the deaths were due to one of these seven diseases, there was a great variability in diagnoses.(AU)

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to evaluate swine females of different genetic lines submitted to different reproductive management and housing systems during pregnancy on reproductive performance and animal welfare parameters. After artificial insemination protocol, 524 females were divided into two gestation housing systems: PEN1=animals housed in individual stalls during the breeding and after group-housed; PEN32=animals housed in individual stalls from breeding until 32 days of pregnancy and after group-housed. The number of piglets born, and the pregnancy and farrowing rates were evaluated. Welfare parameters related to the pregnancy phase were used. Females who weaned more piglets in the previous farrowing had a higher number of piglets born at the next farrowing. The pregnancy rate was affected by the number of semen doses. The farrowing rate was not influenced by the evaluated parameters, with average value of 91.36%. There was no effect of the gestation housing system and the genetic lines on pregnancy and farrowing rates, with values above 90.0%. The animal welfare indicators showed more compromised parameters in PEN1 system. PEN1 system did not impair the reproductive performance although it presented more compromised animal welfare parameters.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Reproductive efficacy of sows dictates the level of profitability of the production itself, and the moment of testing and selection of gilts for breeding (as the parents of a future generation), represents a very important moment. Given the fact that the selection of gilts for breeding is partly based on the weight-gain in the test, in this study we examined the influence of a daily weight-gain of gilts in the test of the manifestation of important reproductive characteristics - the size of the litter of the first and the other parities, as well as the percentage of sows that gave birth in relation to previous breeding process. Data of the 11637 tested gilts that completed the performance test have been used for the test. The studied characteristics were: the weight-gain at the end of the test, the number of live-born piglets, the number of stillborn piglets and the number of grown-weaned piglets in the first litter and the total number of live-born piglets, the total number of stillborn piglets and the total number of grown-weaned piglets. The results obtained in this study showed the effect of weight-gain in the reproductive efficacy test in the number of the live-born piglets in the first and from the 2nd to the 9th parity, as well as the percentage of the sows included in the next breeding process. By including all selected independent variables that showed the adequate statistical significance in correlation with the dependent variable, the determination coefficient rises to a value of 0.098 which represents 9.80% of the influence on the dependent variable, that can be explained by the independent variable, which leads to the conclusion that the binding strength between the variable "average live" and all the independent variables: "the number of litters", the MLD depth" and "the back-fat thickness", is very weak, which is not a rare case in multiple regression.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Mycobacterium (M.) bovis causes tuberculosis and has a broad host range, including humans, livestock, and wild animals. M. bovis infection of wild boar has been reported in several European countries. We report here the first case of M. bovis infection in a domesticated wild sow in Korea. Granulomatous and necrotizing lesions with small numbers of acid-fast bacilli were observed in nodules of the lung of wild sow. Furthermore, the M. bovis isolate from the wild sow had spoligotype SB0140 and a novel MIRU-VNTR allelic profile, which is not found in cattle and deer in Korea.

ABSTRACT

The effect of parity (PO) and weight loss during lactation on the subsequent reproductive performance of 666 sows was investigated. Sows were allocated into three PO classes (PO1, PO2 and PO3-5) and into two classes of weight loss percentage (≤1% and >1%) during lactation. Farrowing rate, weaning to estrus interval (WEI) and total born at next farrow were evaluated. There was an interaction effect between PO and weight loss on the farrowing rate (P<0.05). PO1 and PO2 females had more chance (P<0.05) of failure to farrow when weight loss was higher than 1%. However, the higher weight loss was not a risk factor to low farrowing rate in PO3-5 females (P>0.05). There was no interaction between PO and weight loss (P>0.05) on WEI and subsequent total born. PO1 females showed longer WEI and lower litter size on subsequent farrowing compared to PO2 and PO3-5 females. Weight loss did not affect WEI (P>0.05), but it decreased subsequent litter size (P<0.05). High weight loss during lactation results an increase in reproductive failures in young females and decreases subsequent litter size in all parity orders.

ABSTRACT

We detected Torque teno sus virus 1 and 2 (TTSuV1 and TTSuV2) in tissue samples from 18 stillborn piglets using nested polymerase chain reaction. The detection rates of TTSuV1 and TTSuV2 were 78% and 50%, respectively, with 83% of the stillborn piglets positive for TTSuV1 or TTSuV2. TTSuV1 was detected highest in the liver (72%) followed by heart (56%), spleen (38%) and tonsils (38%) while TTSuV2 was detected highest in the tonsils (38%) followed by liver (33%), spleen (25%), and heart (17%). These results indicate that TTSuVs are commonly present but not equally distributed among the tissues of stillborn piglets.

ABSTRACT

The objective of the present study was to in determine the effect of probiotic and/or prebiotic added to feed for sows. An entirely randomized design with 24 sows, 4 treatments and 6 replicates (T1 = control; T2 = prebiotic; T3 = probiotic; and T4 = prebiotic + probiotic) was used. The addition of probiotic and/or prebiotic decreased the number of mummified piglets. The addition of prebiotic to sow´s feed, with or without probiotic, increased the concentration of milk protein on the 21st day of lactation. On the14th day of lactation, the of Clostridium perfringens was smaller in the faeces of sows fed with probiotic (T3 and T4). On the 21st day of lactation, the concentration of Bifidobacterium in the faeces was statistically lower in sow food with prebiotic (T2). Concentrations of Enterobacteriaceae were higher in the faeces of sows that received probiotic (T3).

ABSTRACT

Xanthium strumarium (guizazo de caballo) is among the plants with antimitotic activity. OBJECTIVES: to determine in this species the agricultural features to guarantee the appropriate plant material. METHODS: during 2007-2009 studies were conducted to assess to sow dates: June and July; two sow distances 90 x 30 cm and 90 x 50 cm at two sow periods: three months of age (aerial parts and roots) in plants with a flowering-fructification states and four months of age (only roots) in plants in fructification process. Seeds obtained from wild aerial plants were sowed in plots, three repetitions in each case. The plants height was assessed at the harvest moment, choosing 10 plants/lots and 39 plants/lots were growed at a 90 x 30 cm distance and 24 plants at the 90 x 50 cm distance, in the case of foliage the yields of 10 plants/lots were assessed in each case. RESULTS: there was that at culture the plants heights were higher in those sowed in June at a 90 x 30 cm distance while those sowed in July behaved in a similar way independently of the sow distances used and in correspondence with it, the yields were similar; however, when we desire to grow also the roots, it is preferable to grow at three months of age, and in this case, the higher values were in sows of July at a 90 x 30 cm distance. CONCLUSION: for the plant exploitation with a double aim: aerial parts and roots, since in both there is antimitotic activity, sow must to be performed between June and July at a 90 x 30 cm distance and to harvest the material at three months age

ABSTRACT

Encourage by the breast feeding significance, we achieve a research about the histological structure of the sow nipples. The pieces were fixed in formalin and included in paraffin, 6 µm thick histological sections were done. The slices were stained with HE, Masson's triple stain and Periodic Acid Shiff (PAS). The skin which covers the nipples is thin and it shows few dermal papillae. The terminal of the lactiferous ducts is lined by a thick stratified squamous non keratinized epithelium. In the middle layers its cells are rich in glycogen, here the lamina propria builds several thin and high papillaes which are arranged in regular parallels rows, each papillae is surrounded by other six that make alike a regular hexagon. Between the glandular ducts terminal, the epithelium which covers the summit of the nipple is similar but lacks of papillae. The connective tissue around the ducts shows numerous striated muscular fibres, about 15 µm in diameter approximately, arranged in several concentric layers, that alternate regularly circular with radials ones(AU)

ABSTRACT

This research was conducted to evaluate the effect of adding enzymatic complex (EC) containing carbohydrases to diets for lactating sows and their litters. A total of 264 genetically homogeneous crossbred sows were used. They were blocked by farrowing order and randomly allotted to four treatments, in a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement (lactating diet (LD) x pre-starter diet (PD)), with two levels per factor (with or without EC). The following variables were measured in the sows: weaning weight; weaning weight variation; backfat; backfat variation; body condition; feed consumption and milk composition. The following variables were measured in the litter: feed consumption; post-natal weight; weaning weight; and average weaning weight. No interaction was found among LD and PD for any of the variables studied. Additionally, no effect was observed for either, female weight, backfat, body condition score or milk composition (fat content, crude protein, lactose and dry matter). Litter weaning weight and average litter weaning weight were higher when LD was supplemented with EC in comparison to the piglets from sows fed with diets without EC (74.6 vs 72.9kg and 6.32 vs 6.47kg, respectively). Litters from female fed with CE were 1.7kg heavier at weaning and showed a 0.15kg increase in the average weaning weight (P=0.06; P=0.07, respectively). This resulted in an estimate 2.27kg increase in the body weight at slaughter. Lactating sows fed with diets containing enzymatic complex with carbohydrases had heavier litters at weaning.

ABSTRACT

In order to identify existing agro-industrial by-products and remainders in the region of the Mexican Bajio, which by their availability and level of production could be incorporated in the feeding of gestating sows, the statistical information of agricultural products that by an agro-industrial process generate by-products for livestock was integrated. In this sense, a list of by-product processing plants was created. Likewise, a survey was designed and applied to a significant sample (equation of sampling proportions for maximum variance) of these companies, to know the amounts of raw materials used, transformation coefficients, and the amount and destiny of generated by-products. According to the aforementioned, the future availability of these by-products was determined and regression models were designed. The by-products and remainders that were identified as feasible to be used were more than twenty. However, on the basis of the annual supply and demand of each by-product, the ones that showed the greatest potential to be used in feeding gestating sows were the following: rice husk (4 375 ton), saved of rice (2 905 ton), sesame meal (between 14 400 and 28 800 ton), cabbage remainders (1 092 ton), broccoli and cauliflower remainders (annual 13 400 and 1 800 ton, respectively), avocado remainders (4 800 ton) and palm oil for frying process of nuts (12 000 L). Those with better potential while measuring their future availability are broccoli and cauliflower remainders. With the aim to use agro-industrial by-products and remainders available in the Bajio for sow feeding, bromatologic and nutritional characteristics should be determined, as well as its possible impact on the energy and protein digestibility and sow performance.

ABSTRACT

The aim of the study was to monitor the sow maternal response to a low oxitocin dose in an advanced parturition stage in eutocic and maternal-foetal dystocia. Sixty York x Landrace sows, 30 with eutocic farrowing and 30 with maternal-foetal dystocia were assigned into two different groups: 15 received 0.083 IU/kg of oxytocin after the expulsion of the fifth piglet, and 15 received no treatment at all. Blood samples from every sow in trial were taken from the ear vein at three different times: immediately after membrane rupture, after the fifth piglet was born, and at the end of the farrowing. A third generation blood gas analyzer was used. Results show that when parturition was resumed, sows with maternal-foetal dystocia had significantly greater lactate, pCO2 and ear temperature (P < 0.001), compared with the eutocic sow group. Results from physiological variables and neonatal traits monitored in this experiment show evidence that oxytocin should not be used in normal parturition without stillbirths, since oxytocin in this case had adverse effects on sow performance. Oxytocin administered at the beginning of the second half of parturition decreased 50% the number of born alive with asphyxia in eutocic and dystocic sows, and on the other hand, decreased 50% the number of intra-partum stillbirths in the dystocic group. This is the first study describing the critical blood variables in dystocic sows (pH, pCO2, pO2, glucose, lactate and HCO3), using a third generation gasometry device.

ABSTRACT

This report deals with the acute onset of an abortion outbreak and high sow mortality in one pig herd consisted of 1,200 pigs and 120 sows on Jeju Island, Korea. Affected pregnant sows showed clinical signs, including high fever, gradual anorexia, vomiting, depression, recumbency, prostration, abortion, and a few deaths. Four dead sows, five aborted fetuses from the same litter, and 17 sera collected from sows infected or normal were submitted to the Pathology Division of the National Veterinary Research and Quarantine Service for diagnostic investigation. Grossly, hepatomegaly and splenomegaly were observed in sows. Multiple necrotic foci were scattered in the lungs, liver, spleen, and lymph nodes. Microscopically, multifocal necrotizing lesions and protozoan tachyzoites were present in the lesions. Tachyzoites of Toxoplasma (T.) gondii were detected immunohistochemically. Latex agglutination showed that the sera of 7 of 17 (41.2%) sows were positive for antibody to T. gondii. The disease outbreak in this herd was diagnosed as epizootic toxoplasmosis. To our knowledge, this is the first report of porcine toxoplasmosis with a high abortion rate and sow mortality in Korea.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

The objective of this study was to determine the clincotherapeutic effect of whole bee venom in hypogalactic sows postpartum. Sows after parturition were assigned to treated and nontreated control groups. In the treated group, 22 sows were bee acupunctured once a day for 3 consecutive days. Honeybees (Apis mellifera L.) for bee acupuncture were about 15 days after metamorphosis. One live bee was used to sting the acupoints known as Yang-ming (ST-18, 1.5 cm lateral to the base of the last 2 pairs of teats) and Jiao-chao (GV-1, at the indentation between the base of tail and the anus). In the control group, 20 sows were intramuscularly injected with a standard dosage of penicillin G (400,000 IU/head) once a day for 3 consecutive days. At post-treatment, 85.0% of the drug-treated control and 90.9% of the bee venomtreated group recovered from hypogalactia syndrome. The advantages of apitherapy were that the patients did not have stress because they were not restrained for a long period. The result suggested that apitherapy using bee venom is an effective treatment for sows with hypogalactia syndrome postpartum.
